Sustainable Path for the Chemicals and Materials Sectors

This symposium presents viable, scale-able industrial processes that can sustainably manufacture commodity, specialty, and/or energy intensive chemicals and materials, with reduced energy input, waste streams, and greenhouse gas emission. Current industrial practice gaps are 1) reduction in fossil (i.e., underground coal, oil, and gas) energy use, 2) generation of energy and chemicals from renewable (e.g., solar capture, plant-based, algae, etc.) sources, 3) increases in process efficiency (e.g., fuel cells, lower temperature), 4) energy storage technology (batteries, hydrogen), 5) carbon capture and storage/re-use, 6) direct use of solar energy in processes. Insight into inventories of energy sources/uses and greenhouse gas emission, and 7) regulatory and market challenges and incentives (carbon tax and border adjustment).
